Why We Oppose Zionism and Anti-Semitism

The progressive Palestinian movement has always maintained that Zionism and anti-Semitism are two faces of the same coin and that they often feed off each other. Opposition to both is based on opposition to racism and on a principled and solid belief that human rights should be applied equally and universally to all human beings regardless of their nationality, color or religion. As part of that movement, we have a long record of challenging both, no matter the source, be it from Canadian federal politicians such as Jason Kenney and John Baird, provincial politicians such as Carole James or Canadian mayors such as Gregor Robertson, and even from Jews such as Gilad Atzmon.

From the early inception of Zionism, its founder Theodor Herzl recognized this connection and described anti-Semitism as a “propelling force” and declared: “Anti-Semitism has grown and continues to grow, and so do I”. He also stated: “The governments of all countries scourged by anti-Semitism will be keenly interested in assisting us to obtain the sovereignty we want.” And as early as the first Zionist Congress (1897), Zionists collaborated with anti-Semites to achieve their common goal: ejecting Jews from their respective countries and in-gathering them in the new Ghetto in Palestine.

We also consider those who promote anti-Semitism as our enemies, not just because they are Zionism’s “propelling force” but also because they promote hatred against a religious group.

Without anti-Semitism, there would have been no Israel; without anti-Semitism, Zionism would have never convinced its “cannon fodder” to adopt its settler colonialist ideology.

Since its founding 120 years ago, Zionism has always claimed that it represents all Jews and that Israel is the “Jewish homeland”. The recent Israeli “Nation-State” law is the clear manifestation of this ideology, which was hidden from the world for the past seventy years under the Israeli slogan “the only democracy in the M.E.”. This law is also meant to redefine anti-Semitism by claiming that since Israel represents the Jews, any criticism, repudiation or hatred of Israeli brutal, racist and genocidal policies is considered anti-Semitism.

The Dimitri Lascaris “tweet”
Earlier this month, the major Canadian political parties that rarely agree on any subject in favour of the Canadian people, came out in an unprecedented show of unity and solidarity with Israel and Zionism.

This was in response to this tweet by pro-Palestinian activist and lawyer Dimitri Lascaris:
“Apparently Liberal MPs Anthony Housefather and Michael Levitt are more devoted to apartheid Israel than to their own prime minister and colleagues in the Liberal caucus.”
The backstory here was that Lascaris had exposed the racist nature of several B’nai Brith Canada supporters who were inciting violence against Canadian politicians and called “for the Death Penalty for Justin Trudeau, Jagmeet Singh and Liberal Muslim MPs”. He had called for political leaders to condemn this outrage but the silence at that point was deafening.(For background info on the story see Yves Engler article, Dimitri Lascaris’s response to Justin Trudeau, Independent Jewish Voices position on libelling Lascaris and a follow-up Engler article.)

And as usual, the Zionists employed the 3 D’s of Israeli hasbara: diversions, distortions and defamations. Diverted the attention from the Zionist supporters’ racism and their call to violence and murder, distorted what Lascaris was saying and then defamed him as an anti-Semite.
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) stated in a tweet that Larcaris’ statement fits the “literal definition of #antisemitism” and asked the organization, Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East CJPME, (of which he is Chair of the Board) to “publicly retract & apologize for this antisemitic smear”.
And then those same Canadian politicians that had absolutely no comment earlier, took their cue from CIJA and parroted its accusations and slander.
Canadian Prime minster Justin Trudeau went so far as to say in a tweet that Lascaris’ statement was a “Vile anti-Semitic smear”.
The Leader of Canada’s Conservative Party(CPC), Andrew Scheer, in the name of the CPC caucus, tweeted: “It’s shameful to see two MPs subjected to such anti-Semitism”.
The NDP leader Jagmeet Singh also tweeted:
“Antisemitism has no place in Canada”. And the NDP foreign critic Hélène Laverdière tweeted: “I condemn the anti-Semitic comments directed against them”
Elizabeth May, the leader of the Green Party also jumped on the band wagon and tweeted addressing the two Zionist MP’s (the alleged “victims”): “So unacceptable. Your loyalty to Canada is unquestioned.”
Even the organization CJPME, although taking great pains to point out that Lascaris’ tweet was personal and had nothing to do with them, nonetheless felt compelled to legitimize this Zionist definition of anti-Semitism by saying in their email statement: “The Jewish community is sensitive to allegations of divided loyalties … CJPME agrees that it is unnecessary to invoke questions of loyalty to Canada.”

The above quotes show clearly how the Zionist lobby has succeeded in hijacking the truth and the agenda by imposing its narrative on the vast majority of Canadian politicians, media and even some civil society groups, be they Jewish or non-Jewish.
Shockingly, a recent revelation made by Adalah noted: “The Israeli government declared that ‘the Knesset [is permitted] to legislate laws everywhere in the world’ and that it is authorized ‘to violate the sovereignty of foreign countries via legislation that would be applied to events occurring in their territories,’ in legal materials it recently submitted to the Israeli Supreme Court.”

Once upon a time, there were leaders in Canada who cared about truth, fairness, equality and dignity of all peoples. In 1935, the national leader of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation CCF (the NDP’s predecessor) J. S. Woodsworth, predicted the dangers of the Zionist Movement. He stated, referring to Zionism, that “if nationalism was ‘over-emphasized’ it would call forth a counter-nationalism that [would] be very disadvantageous.” He also said “the promotion of the interest of a sectional group tends to provoke a certain reaction in other sections of the population, and thus defeat the very object in view.”
Also, in 1938, when Woodsworth was approached to get CCF support for the Zionist settler project, he was quoted as saying: “It was easy for Canadians, Americans and the British to agree to a Jewish colony, as long as it was somewhere else. Why ‘pick on the Arabs’ other than for ‘strategic’ and ‘imperialistic’ consideration…” (Canada and the birth of Israel, David J. Bercuson, page 18, page 19).
Mr. Jagmeet Singh and Ms. Hélène Laverdière, please take note.

Zionists’ loyalty has always been to Zionism and its settler colonialist project
The claim that Zionism represents THE Jews is false and in itself promotes anti-Semitism. Those who believe that Zionism represents the Jews, including Canadian politicians, are either Zionists, anti-Semites or are promoters of it.
As the True Torah Jews put it: “…there are, generally, two types of people who conflate Judaism with Zionism: Zionists who try to legitimize Zionism, or anti-Semites who try delegitimizing Judaism.”

In fact, Jews were the first to recognize these facts and were the first to oppose the settler colonialist ideology, ZIONISM.
* In 1897 on the occasion of the first Zionist Congress, the Executive Committee of the Association of Rabbis in Germany issued the anti-Zionist manifesto that stated: “Judaism obligates its adherents to serve with all devotion the Fatherland to which they belong, and to further its national interests with all their heart and strength.” (Unease in Zion, Ehud Ben Ezer, Page 22)
* The strongest opposition to the Balfour Declaration within the British Government came from its only Jewish member, Sir Edwin Montagu, who wrote: “Zionism has always seemed to me to be a mischievous political creed, untenable by any patriotic citizen of the United Kingdom…I assert that there is not a Jewish nation…When the Jews are told that Palestine is their national home, every country will immediately desire to get rid of its Jewish citizens…”
Also, more recently 40+ Jewish organizations from all over the world declared: “This conflation undermines both the Palestinian struggle for freedom, justice and equality and the global struggle against antisemitism. It also serves to shield Israel from being held accountable to universal standards of human rights and international law.”

Zionism and its adherents seem to care less about the well being of the Jews, and more about the survival of the Zionist settler colonialist project. In 1938, the Zionist leader and later the first prime minister of Israel, David Ben-Gurion, stated: “If I knew that it was possible to save all the children of Germany by transporting them to England, and only half by transferring them to the Land of Israel, I would choose the latter, for before us lies not only the numbers of these children but the historical reckoning of the people of Israel.”
This tradition continues today as Israel and the Zionist lobby openly collaborate with extreme anti-Semites and racists as long as they are pro-Israel.

Canadian Zionists showed their true “loyalty” to Canada when they broke the Canadian law and the U.N. embargo on war material and manpower to the region in 1948: ”The (Canadian) government was reluctant to draw attention to this matter (the Zionist volunteers) and refused to invoke the Foreign Enlistment Act (a law passed to discourage Canadians from fighting fascism during the Spanish Civil War) … More than 300 Canadians eventually joined the Israeli forces while tons of military equipment, from Harvard training aircraft to radio sets, were smuggled out of Canadian ports. The recruiting of volunteers and the smuggling of arms were done with the active knowledge and assistance of leaders of the United Zionist Council…” (Canada and the birth of Israel, David J. Bercuson, page191.)

Why this Alliance between Zionism and Colonialism and Imperialism?
The real reason behind the support western colonialist and imperial countries have been giving to Zionism is that it serves their interests in the Arab region. It is not because of any Western love for Jews or even Zionists for that matter. The Zionist movement realized all of this in the early stages and quickly exploited it.

Theodore Herzl wrote in his book “The Jewish State”: “There we shall be a sector of the wall of Europe against Asia, we shall serve as the outpost of civilization against barbarism.”
Another Zionist leader, Chaim Weizmann, who was a close friend of the South African Apartheid leader Jan Smuts, also stated: “We had long pointed out to the British, and I repeated it again in my interview with Lord Cecil, that a Jewish Palestine would be a safeguard to England, in particular in respect to the Suez Canal.”

The support of Western powers to the Zionist project makes them complicit in Israeli war crimes, and by their support they are enabling Israel to carry on with the crimes of genocide and Apartheid against the Palestinian people.
We also should realize that their support to Israel and Zionism will continue only as long as Western imperial interests are being served. We could speculate further that their pretense of being “controlled” by the Zionist lobby helps to set the necessary exit strategy when Israel becomes a liability to those interests, and we know all too well who will be the target of any future backlash. Imperialism and settler colonialism have no morality nor conscience.

Trudeau and Canadian politicians are objectively promoting racism!
Mr. Trudeau, what falls under the category of “Vile anti-Semitic smears” is your support for the Zionist claim that it represents the Jews; by tarnishing the Jews with the war crimes that the Zionist state is committing against the Palestinian people and against humanity, you are the one objectively promoting anti-Semitism, not Mr. Lascaris. What constitutes “Vile anti-Semitic smears” is your support for the supremacist ideology of Zionism that uprooted and stole the land of the Semitic indigenous people of Palestine.
If you ever wake up one day with a conscience, how about implementing what Sir Edwin Montagu suggested in 1917 to the British Government:
“I would willingly disfranchise every Zionist. I would be almost tempted to proscribe the Zionist organisation as illegal and against the national interest.”

Unfortunately, we live in an era where supremacist, colonialist and imperialist forces control the world from the barrel of a gun. For peace, justice and dignity to prevail, it is incumbent on all of us to fight against all forms of racism and the hegemonic designs of those imperial powers, wherever they manifest. Otherwise, humanity is doomed.

Groups tell BC Attorney General: End Complicity in Violations of Int’l Law

Update: Our public response to David Eby’s brief reply and refusal to meet with representatives.

The following letter, signed by 26 groups, was hand delivered to BC Attorney General David Eby’s office, during a picket to say “End Complicity in Israeli Occupation and War Crimes!”
The letter articulated concerns regarding BC government liquor stores carrying Israeli wines in violation of international humanitarian laws.
——————————————————–

Sept. 12, 2018
David Eby, BC Attorney General

Dear Mr. Eby:

We wish to bring to your attention our concerns about Israeli wines, many of them produced in the Occupied Territories, which are being sold in our publicly owned BC Liquor Stores. We note that as BC’s Attorney General, you are responsible for the provincial Liquor Distribution Branch. We had hoped that the current NDP government would be more concerned with these blatant violations of international human rights, but we are aware that your response to inquiries so far has been to completely ignore the issues raised and instead focus solely on “personal choice”.

The wines in question are either from the Galil Winery, which is a joint venture with the Golan Heights Winery (the name of which speaks for itself), or from the occupied West Bank, including the illegal Gush Etzion settlement bloc around Jerusalem. Two wines of particular note are the Efrat Judean Hills Kosher and Vision Malbec, both produced by the Israeli Teperberg Winery. This winery openly states that some of its vineyards are in occupied Palestinian territories and even provides a map on its website showing vineyards in the occupied West Bank.

One of the Teperberg vineyards is in the illegal Israeli settlement of Mevo Horon according to the progressive Israeli research group “Who Profits”. This particular settler enclave is in the Latrun area of the occupied Palestinian West Bank and is close to the infamous “Canada Park” built by the Jewish National Fund on the rubble of 3 Palestinian villages with Canadian tax-deductible monies.
All of this is in direct contravention of the Fourth Geneva Convention and “stated” Canadian policy. Detailed information on Israeli wineries can be found in the exhaustive study done by “Who Profits” entitled Forbidden Fruit: Israeli Wine Industry and Occupation.

We recognize that an ongoing campaign was initially launched 10 years ago and was endorsed by 22 local and international groups. At that time, the Israeli government had announced plans to “rebrand” its 60 years of dispossession and ethnic cleansing; sadly, we are now at 70 years of Palestinian dispossession and the situation for Palestinians, especially in Gaza, is worsening by the day. Educational pickets have also highlighted the parallels between the campaign in BC against South African apartheid wines and this campaign. Public reaction to these actions has been encouraging and additionally, other activists in eastern Canada have launched a lawsuit against the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for mislabelling such wines as “made in Israel”.

We, the undersigned groups, call on the BC Government to investigate the stocking of these illicit wines on BC Liquor Store shelves; we do not wish to be made complicit in these violations of international law.

Sabra Hummus is the target of boycott campaigns on many university campuses in the U.S., the UK and Canada because of the deplorable human rights record of one of its partner companies, Strauss Group. Strauss is the second largest Israeli food and beverage company and is known for supporting two Israeli military units implicated in human rights abuses, the Golani and Givati brigades.

Even by the abysmal standards of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), the Golani brigade is particularly brutal; since its inception, the Brigade has carried out countless human rights violations against Palestinians, including arbitrary murders, assaults, incarcerations, evictions, and arrests of children. Furthermore, the Brigade’s existence as an occupying force violates international law. Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, the construction of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, and its 1967 annexation of East Jerusalem are all illegal according to the United Nations and even stated Canadian policy.
Israeli military forces on the Gaza border have killed over 140 unarmed Palestinian protestors in just the last 4 months alone, a figure that includes children, medical workers and journalists.

Join with human rights campaigners globally and take a pledge to not buy Sabra Hummus and other Sabra Products.

CBC Influenced by Zionist Lobby

UPDATE June 22, 2018
CBC won’t answer how the Zionist lobby dictated specific wording for its reporters!

On April 6, 2018, we issued a statement regarding CBC’s biased coverage of the Land Day Massacre of unarmed Palestinians by Israeli snipers. Both CBC executives and the CBC Ombudsman Office were made aware of our concerns, especially the issue of specific word changes at the behest of a third party (see below).
And here we are, over 2 months later, and double the time suggested for CBC executives to answer, and still no response. The Ombudsman Office has even reminded CBC management 3 times that they are waiting for an official reply.
However, the Zionist lobby group that initiated all of this, “Honest Reporting”, has bragged on its website that they indeed succeeded in having CBC “implement our suggestions”.
We would suggest that CBC is “refusing comment” because there is no good answer to what transpired. Here are the facts. Specific wording was changed by a correspondent (Derek Stoffel) thousands of miles away, within the space of a few hours, after CBC received a complaint by “Honest Reporting”. And how did that happen? CBC won’t respond, nothing, no explanation!
Just to sum up, a pro-Israel advocacy group gets CBC’s attention within hours, even in regards to changing specific language used by reporters, and then flaunts their achievement publicly, whereas a pro-Palestinian group asking for a minimum of balanced coverage has been stonewalled for 11 weeks and counting.
The ridiculous façade of CBC representing and being accountable to all people in Canada is wearing extremely thin. This subservience to outside lobby groups is unacceptable. We demand an immediate review of this incident by both the CBC Ombudsman office and the Minister of Heritage, who is responsible for CBC.

Hanna Kawas, Canada Palestine Association.

============================================================

The following letter was sent to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) regarding their biased coverage of the Land Day massacre and is just one example of the unbalanced reporting by the North American mainstream media on the Palestinian narrative. The letter was hand delivered on April 6 during a solidarity vigil for Palestine at the Vancouver offices of CBC, Canada’s national public broadcaster.

April 5, 2018
Dear CBC
Re: Your coverage of the Land Day massacre in Gaza
You state that you “are independent of all lobbies and of all political and economic influence.” This might be true regarding the government that pays for your operations and wages but we regret to say it is definitely NOT true with the pro-Israeli lobby. Once again you were influenced by their lobbying and succumbed to their dictates, propaganda and falsehoods, even in regards to the use of specific language.
Let us start with how the CBC has tried to obscure Israel’s premeditated killing of unarmed protestors by instead talking about “clashes” and “confrontations” and “rock throwing”. The lack of accuracy in your CBC News March 30, 2018 report is but one example. The narrator says: “Israeli forces responded with force against rock throwing Palestinian protesters, at least seven Palestinians have been killed, hundreds more has been wounded.” And then your correspondent Derek Stoffel reported: “some of those men were throwing stones and Molotov cocktail at the Israeli forces on the other side and they responded with tear gas with rubber bullets and in some cases with live ammunition…”. (Notice the downplaying of the use of live ammunition, which contradicts hospital reports of the wounded). Also, your web article on March 30 from the AP ran with the subtitle:- “’Right of return’ mass sit-in organized by Hamas escalated into rock-slinging, tear gas firing” as if rocks and tear gas are more deadly than live ammunition! You would think that all this “rioting” “violence” and the “throwing of stones and Molotov cocktails” that you emphasized would have left some Israeli causalities as well, but no, we did not hear from your reporter or any other reporter about Israeli causalities because there were none.
Such reporting makes you complicit with Israeli war crimes and brutality, noting that your description of what happened is a carbon copy of the Israeli military briefings. The same logic of blaming the victim was also reported by Mr. Stoffel on the National later the same day.
How about the reports from the Israeli Human Rights group, B’tselem, who not only warned in advance that the Israeli military were about to conduct a massacre, but have launched a new public campaign calling on Israeli soldiers to refuse such orders to shoot at unarmed protestors? How about the IDF tweet, later deleted, that bragged they “knew where every bullet landed”? How about Gideon Levy, from Israeli newspaper Haaretz, who coined the term Israel Massacre Forces after last Friday?
For a contrast, from reporters live on the ground, you could have checked out Al Jazeera reporting which stated, “As unarmed protesters marched toward the border fence, Israeli soldiers opened fire.”
So much for your stated values of “Accuracy, Fairness, Balance, Impartiality and Integrity”.
And why is it in all your reporting you did not mention that Israel and its backer, the U.S., adamantly refused to accept any UN independent investigation? What are Israel and the US afraid of? Unearthing the TRUTH?
Now, lets move to language regarding the Palestinian refugees and how you followed the dictates of the Zionist lobby group “Honest Reporting”.
There was an initial Derek Stoffel report that we can no longer find on the internet anywhere, except on the “Honest Reporting” website post. They complained in regards to this report, that “it’s false to claim that in the 1948 war that ‘hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were forced from their homes during the Israeli War of Independence in 1948…’”. They then dictated to you what is acceptable terminology by saying, “It’s accurate to say that they were ‘displaced,’ but conventional reportage dictates that journalists say that the Palestinians voluntarily fled … It’s unfair to say that all were “forced from their homes…”.
And sure enough, the same day, in a later report, Mr. Stoffel corrected himself and he stated after stumbling briefly, that the protesters were “demanding the right of return, that people head to their homes…where they had to flee when the state of Israel was created.”
For your information what happened in 1948 was not a “WAR”, it was an act of aggression and genocide. Check your facts with the Palestinian historian Walid Khalidi and his book “All That Remains: The Palestinian Villages Occupied and Depopulated by Israel in 1948”, the story of the over 400 Palestinian villages that were destroyed or depopulated. You could also consult with the Israeli historian Ilan Pappe and his book “The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine” before you jump to follow the dictates of a foreign interest group.

There was another criticism of Stoffel’s original report from “Honest Reporting”, which was using the term Palestinians when talking about the 6 victims of the original Land Day. His initial report stated: “on Land Day, that’s the day in which Palestinians commemorate the shootings and killings by Israel of six Palestinians back in 1976 as Israel was involved in a program of confiscating land.” While they curiously did not object to the stated facts of what happened on Land Day 1976, they dictated to you that other news agencies call them Arabs and you should too. Israel calls its Palestinians citizens Arabs to deny the existence of the indigenous population of Palestine. Their slogan always has been “A land without people”. And once again on cue, later in the day, your correspondent Mr. Stoffel dropped Land Day 1976 altogether from one report, while on the National he got in step and called the murdered Palestinians “Arab Israelis”: “The march began as Palestinians marked Land Day to commemorate the six Arab Israelis killed by Israel …”
While all Palestinians are culturally Arabs and are proud of it, most of the two million Palestinian Israelis consider themselves Palestinian. Has Mr. Stoffel seen what kind of flags the Palestinian Israelis carry when they commemorate Land Day and other Palestinian occasions??
Finally, Mr. Stoffel considers the “six weeks of sustained protests on Fridays” “a new security threat for Israel” and also thinks “the right of return … will be a security threat.” On May 11/1949, Canada co-sponsored the U.N. General Assembly resolution 273 to admit Israel as a state to the U.N. on condition that Israel implements two resolutions – UN resolution 194 (the Right of Return), and UN resolution 181 (the Partition Plan). Israel never implemented these two resolutions in addition to hundreds of UN Security and General Assembly resolutions that have stayed on the shelves collecting dust for the past seventy years. Wouldn’t a sane person conclude that Israel has been the true security threat not only to the Palestinians and Arabs but also to the peoples of the world?
CBC is unabashedly supporting Israeli ethnic cleansing, war crimes and Apartheid. We ask you to respect your stated values, especially accuracy and impartiality, and to not cave in to the pressure of a lobby group that is more concerned with serving a foreign government than in bringing the truth to the public in Canada.
