Tell ScotiaBank to Divest Completely from Elbit Systems! – Action Network

We will not rest until they divest – Join the campaign to force Scotiabank to complete their divestment from Elbit and stop war profiteering!

Scotiabank’s investment in Elbit Systems is an outstanding example of the ties between Canadian imperialism and the Zionist colonisation and occupation of Palestine. Scotiabank is Canada’s 12th largest corporation and, along with the other big banks, a main instrument of the Canadian ruling classes’ ownership and control of the Canadian economy.  It profits directly from the missiles, bombs, drones and munitions being used to commit genocide in Gaza and war crimes across the region.

And the grassroots, cross country campaign to force Scotiabank to divest from Elbit has been one of the best examples of the people in this country confronting our ruling class and political establishment over its unrelenting backing of Israel.  And it is working! In 2024, Scotiabank reduced their investment in Elbit Systems from over $500 million to currently about $130 million.

As the genocide in Gaza, and Israel’s war crimes throughout the region continue, now is the time to continue the pressure, to raise the price for Scotiabank’s war profiteering, popularize the international campaign to shut down Elbit, and normalize BDS campaigns with deep routes and real impact in our communities.

The Canada Palestine Association is therefore calling for two days of action against Scotiabank on December 13 & 14, 2024.  We encourage organizations, groups of activists and friends, co-workers and neighbours to hold a picket outside the Scotiabank branch in your neighbourhood, community or town on these days.  As few as five people can have a good presence outside a branch with signs and leaflets exposing Scotiabank’s war profiteering and role in the Gaza genocide.

  1. Please let us know about your action by emailing cpavancouver@gmail.com
  2. Let us know if you want electronic copies of printable signs and leaflets.  We can customize the leaflet to include your organization’s logo and contact information.
  3. Join the Scotiabank DOA December 13 & 14 signal group if you want support or advice planning your action: https://signal.group/#CjQKID0uxG73ZZA275By0S936yM113T9wQOphjjbbqMD4WeuEhBMiZ_qBVzRwFYuDlXI-tNT

#ShameonScotiabank Picket, Nov 29

  • Join us on November 29, 3 pm at Broadway & Commercial, Vancouver to mark the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinians by telling Scotiabank that we will not rest until they divest completely from Israeli war crimes. Any funding of genocide is too much.

Scotiabank’s asset fund has reduced its half a billion dollar investment in Elbit 4 times, but still owns 1.3% of Elbit shares (worth US$112 million as of Sept. 30/24 and now worth over US$130 million). Many groups and individuals have been part of the campaign to say #ShameonScotiabank for funding Israeli genocide; it is this collective pressure that produced results. A special shoutout to allies in the artists and writers community who embraced this issue, especially with regards to the Giller Prize.

VPD hears complaints by pro-Palestine advocates, then appoints former Deputy Chief to investigate

Says Dania Barakat, a local Palestinian organizer:
“Across the country and around the world, we are seeing a rise in police and state repression against pro-Palestinian activists. This increasing anti-Palestinian racism is happening as we are witnessing a genocide unfolding in Gaza every day and as Canada refuses to implement a two-way arms embargo against Israel. But the VPD repression and surveillance of our actions will not stop us. The global movement for our liberation is only growing.”
