We have Lost a Courageous and Honest Scholar: David Noble

We at the Canada Palestine Association-Vancouver and the Voice of Palestine-Canada express our deepest condolences to the wife and family of Professor David Noble who passed away on December 27, 2010.
Prof. Noble was a leading academic and principled activist of Jewish background who pioneered the struggle at York University against the influence of the pro-Israel lobby. His unflinching courage and honesty will be sadly missed. He was featured three times on Voice of Palestine Radio over the last few years and we are including the links below.

Once again, we are saddened by this unexpected and tragic news.

PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

December 28, 2010

Canada loses David Noble, a great fighter for social and political justice.

With great sadness and deepest sorrow, we received the news of the passing away of Professor David Franklin Noble (July 22, 1945 – December 27, 2010).

Professor Noble was a critical historian of technology, science and education; a relentless crusader against the commercialization of higher education; a passionate champion of academic freedom; and a staunch opponent of discrimination. He last taught in the Division of Social Science, and the department of Social and Political Thought at York University in Toronto.

Professor Noble was an anti-Zionist Jew and a member of Independent Jewish Voices. In his critique of what he views as an academic-industrial system, Professor Noble has questioned Israel’s strategic role in Western institutions on a broad basis.

In late November 2004, Professor Noble handed out a flyer to his class entitled “The York University Foundation: The Tail That Wags the Dog” proposing that there was a connection between pro-Israeli influence on the York Foundation and the university administration’s treatment of vocal pro-Palestinian students on campus.

He later launched a $25 million libel suit at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice against York University, Jewish, and Israeli organizations for defamation and conspiracy, accusing them of having improperly criticized his flyer as anti-semitic.

In April 2006 Professor Noble lodged a complaint with the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC), stating that cancellation of classes during certain Jewish holidays constituted discrimination against non-Jewish students. OHRC investigation found York’s practice discriminatory and, before the issue made it to the Tribunal, York University agreed to stop the practice, starting in September 2009.

Throughout his life, whether at the personal or professional/academic level, Professor Noble was the embodiment of intellectual honesty, courage, and decency. Canada lost a truly noble person, both in name and in the essence of his character.

“Oh heart, if one should say to you that the soul perishes like the body, answer that the flower withers, but the seed remains.” Kahlil Gibran

We at the Canadian Arab Federation, Palestine House, Islamic Society of York Region and Canadian Shia Muslims Organization extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Sarah, his three children, his two brothers [and a sister], and stand with them during this difficult period.

The Bankruptcy of Canadian Zionists and Their Stooges

By: Hanna Kawas

It seems that the Canadian Zionists are not satisfied with the results of their pro-Israel “advocacy”, “rebranding”, “public affairs” and “hasbara” work. The Zionist paper, The Canadian Jewish News, recently reported the following: – “A sea (of) change is about to occur in the way Canadian Jewish community advocacy is conducted on both a regional and a national level. According to Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC), the change is being led by the Canadian Council for Israel and Jewish Advocacy (CIJA), which is seeking to centralize control of the host of Jewish (read Israel – ed.) advocacy agencies it administers … and create a ‘single Jewish public affairs organization encompassing the national and regional level.’ The new entity would also work ‘in close co-operation with’ and ‘operate under’ the UIA (United Israel Appeal) Federations Canada system.” (1)
Since its founding in January 2004, CIJA “oversees and coordinates the advocacy work of Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC), Canada-Israel Committee (CIC), Quebec-Israel Committee (QIC), National Jewish Campus Life (NJCL) and University Outreach Committee (UOC)”, effectively controlling all these groups both politically and financially. Its declared objective is to “ensure our voice is heard where it counts – in government, media and on campus.” (2)

It is a sad fact that Canadian Zionists have always been successful in not just being heard by various levels of Canadian government and media but also using these institutions as forums to protect Israel (a foreign power) and it colonialist apartheid project. So CIJA is not worried about the provincial and federal governments nor the main stream media (our website is full of examples of their defence of, and complicity in, Israeli atrocities and war crimes). However, what they are really worried about is their faltering image on campuses and among the Canadian public at large; hence, the “sea (of) change” to “centralize control” for Israel advocacy in Canada.

Four recent examples show the moral bankruptcy of the Zionists and their stooges.

• The CJC response (3) to KAIROS Palestine’s policy paper “A Moment of Truth” (4) is callous, inhumane, supremacist and full of historic distortions and fallacies. It is also a slap in the face of all Christians who support peace with justice, especially the Palestinian Christians (the first Christians and the Guardians of the holy places), who are trying to reach out to the world with their cry of hope, justice and peace.

• On Nov. 7, 2010, the so-called “Inter-parliamentary Coalition for Combating Anti-Semitism” held the Ottawa Conference on Combating Anti-Semitism. Shockingly, the invitations were issued as well “On behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry for Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism” and stated that the conference was “working in cooperation with the Canadian Government”. Not shockingly, they were signed by Jason Kenney and Irwin Cotler. The Governor General of Canada, the Prime Minster and the Liberal leader all rushed to both attend and address this conference. The objective of the conference was to shield Israel from criticism and accordingly limit freedom of speech in Canada and elsewhere, and was trying to set the stage to criminalize criticism of Israel. If and when these objectives are not met, then the “Anti-Semitism” card is being used to try to scare pro-Palestinian activists and silence their solidarity work by harassing and threatening them. In his speech to the conference Stephen Harper used the same words set out by leading Israeli propagandists(5), when he stated “Demonization, double standards, delegitimization, the three D’s, it is the responsibility of us all to stand up to them”. The PM also showed his true face by showing the extent to which he will go to support Israel right or wrong: “But, as long as I am Prime Minister, whether it is at the UN or the Francophonie or anywhere else, Canada will take that stand, whatever the cost (my emphasis-ed.)” (6). Because of this fanatical and unconditional support for Israel, Canada lost a seat at the UN Security Council and a free military base on UAE soil (that should not have been there in the first place). We did not see Israel offering a free base for the Canadian military instead. Clearly, the PM and his government are showing a clear disregard for decency, humanity and the strategic interests of the Canadian people. Which national anthem are they singing: O Canada or O Israel??

• At the University of British Columbia (UBC), in Vancouver, the Israel Awareness Club (IAC) and their “friends” tried to block a humanitarian donation of $700 by the Social Justice Centre of UBC (SJC) to the Canadian Boat to Gaza, a project trying to lift the crippling Israeli siege against the 1.5 million Palestinians. The Israeli blockade goes on in spite of a recent call by 21 international human rights organizations calling for an immediate end to the Gaza siege (7). In contrast to IAC’s self-serving action, Palestinian fire fighters recently participated in controlling the massive forest fire near Haifa as a humanitarian gesture. Meanwhile, at UBC, despite losing the vote on the donation at student council, Zionist intimidation and scare tactics continue, including an outlandish “terrorist” smear campaign, targeting students during the most stressful exam period. How low can you go?

• And most recently, in a new depth of abuse of legislative process, on December 7, 2010, some members of the Ontario Legislature condemned an MA thesis written by Jenny Peto, a granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor, entitled “The Victimhood of the Powerful: White Jews, Zionism and the Racism of Hegemonic Holocaust Education” (8). This was not the first time the Ontario Legislature came to the defence of Israel; earlier this year, some of the same MPPs led an attack on the student activity Israeli Apartheid Week held across the country(9). On Dec 8, 2010, the Toronto Star reported that “Ontario citizenship and immigration minister Eric Hoskins said that he was ‘greatly disturbed and in fact disgusted’… Hoskins was responding to Progressive Conservative MPP Steve Clark, who called the thesis ‘disgusting.’ PC MPP Peter Shurman, whose Thornhill riding includes a large Jewish population, said the thesis was a hateful, poorly researched ‘piece of garbage.’” (10) The National Post also quoted Shurman as saying “‘I’m not sure Ontario is an appropriate place for preaching hate.’ He hasn’t read the paper, but nonetheless owes it to his largely Jewish constituents to defend Israel on their behalf, he said.” (11) Mr. Shurman alleges to be concerned for the feelings of his Jewish constituents, but not the Jewish daughter of a holocaust survivor, simply because she is not a Zionist. It is interesting that this representative of the Ontario people feels free to pass academic and moral judgment on a university thesis without admittedly even reading the paper. It seems it is enough for him to get his marching orders from the Zionist establishment. Perhaps he also has a hotline to the Israeli ambassador, like other Canadian politicians!!

No wonder the Zionists and their (way more than three) stooges are going bust and bankrupt. CIJA is wasting more than 11 million dollars on advocacy for Israel and one million of it reportedly goes to Canadian campuses. Small wonder CIJA is “seeking to centralize control”. However, their re-branding and their three D’s will not change the facts on the ground; rather, their desperate attempts are based on three other D’s – Diversion, Distortion of the truth and the message and Defamation of the messenger, all of which are being exposed daily by people with common sense.
In 1896, Theodor Herzl wrote in his book “The Jewish State”: “In Palestine…we shall be for Europe a part of the wall against Asia, we shall serve as a vanguard of civilization against barbarism.” After 114 years, it seems many in the Canadian main stream media and all levels of government still believe in the supremacist ideology of Zionist settler colonialism.
On Dec. 12, 2010, Jonathan Kay wrote in the National Post under the title: “Jonathan Kay: The Jenny Peto scandal shows that it’s time to clean house at OISE”, and demanded that the University of Toronto’s teacher’s college (OISE) be cleansed from any anti-Israel criticism. He stated: “Surely, the higher-ups at UToronto know about this sort of thing. Will the Peto scandal give them the excuse they need to clean house?” (12) We ask the people of Canada: Isn’t it now the time to clean house in the main stream media, provincial and federal government offices from those whose main concern is self-interest and the interest of a foreign government, and not the interest of the Canadian people?

We are certain that the Palestinian people will finally enjoy equality, justice, peace and dignity.

Letter From Kevin Neish to Mountain Equipment Coop (MEC)

The following letter was sent by Mavi Marmara survivor Kevin Neish to Mountain Equipment Coop (MEC). Please note that Kevin is not a member of the Canada Palestine Association but we are publishing his letter on our site on his behalf.

Dear MEC Board,

My name is Kevin Neish and I’m a MEC member. I was on board the humanitarian aid ship the Mavi Marmara when it was assaulted by Israeli commandos on May 31st 2010. I witnessed, or saw the evidence of, the Israeli military’s murder and execution of 9 fellow aid workers and wounding by gunfire 30 to 40 others. Myself and the other survivors suffered brutal humiliating treatment by the Israelis on the ship, in prison and during our deportation. Beatings, torture and abuse were commonplace. As a white Westerner I was safer than the Arab and Turkish aid workers but even I was threatened several times with beatings and I had a gun put to my head at least 6 times for daring to challenge the soldiers brutal treatment of fellow aid workers. I was not permitted to use a washroom for over 15 hours and was not allowed to sleep for 3 days, with prison guards apparently enjoying waking us up regularly all night long.

I was heading to Gaza to assist in repairing their water and sewer systems and to act as a human shield for school children. I had over $1000 of high quality MEC clothing and equipment in my luggage but the Israeli soldiers either stole or destroyed almost everything I had. I imagine that my new Contention Gore-Tex jacket and Keen Oregon boots are now wandering around Tel Aviv on some soldier.

It’s quite possible that some of MEC’s Israeli partner company’s equipment was in use by the commandos who attacked me on the Mavi. Perhaps some of those companies employees were the ones putting guns to my head and beating people around me.

I will not purchase one single item of equipment or clothing from MEC until you come to your senses and stop dealing with Israeli companies. They support Israel’s brutal military, oppress and exploit the Arab minority in Israel and support the illegal occupation and brutalisation of Palestine.

I would be more then willing to explain, document and prove what happened to me in person at any meeting of the MEC board or membership.

I look forward to your reply.

Kevin Neish

Racism on the Buses in Greater Vancouver‏

By Hanna Kawas. The following open letter was sent to Coast Mountain Bus Company regarding the unjust firing of a Lebanese Canadian activist, Marwan Marwan.

Canada Palestine Association also holds the current federal government responsible for this frightening increase in anti-Arab and anti-Muslim hysteria; this government has been promoting and sanctioning this racism by its unconditional and blind support for Israel and its opposition to the Arab and Muslim peoples’ liberation and control of their resources and destiny. On March 21, 2009, we warned in our statement “Jason Kenney is Promoting Racism”, that such policies will promote racism. We stated:

“Mr. Kenney, his government and his Zionist friends should be held responsible for any increase in anti-Semitism, anti-Arab racism and any Islamophobic act.”

Open Letter to Coast Mountain Bus Company

The following article in The Tyee “Off the Bus: Fired Driver Says He’s a Victim of Politics” (http://thetyee.ca/News/2010/08/04/Fired_Driver_Victim/) has recently been brought to our attention. From all indications in the article, we in the Canada Palestine Association are deeply concerned and distressed by the firing of bus driver Marwan Marwan. It appears to us that your actions could regrettably be part of the anti-Arab and anti-Muslim hysteria that is engulfing this country (and continent) with no regard for basic international standards of human rights, or the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, not to mention simple human decency and integrity.

We further feel that if Marwan was disciplined for his political beliefs about the situation in the “Middle East”, then what happened was motivated by bigotry and Islamophobia.

We feel that Marwan’s human rights were violated; he, our community and his family, including his pregnant wife and three children, were slandered and collectively punished.

Your company professes integrity in its corporate statement, saying “Integrity – We will act honestly and with integrity at all times. We will treat others with dignity and respect and will conduct ourselves in a manner that will instill and foster trust.” (http://www.coastmountainbus.com/aboutus/statements.asp)

Therefore, we call on Coast Mountain Company to:

  • Make public its findings, as we are sure you agree that racism is everybody’s business.
  • Apologize publicly to Marwan, as well as the Lebanese, Arab and Muslim communities for this racist incident.
  • Fire all those who are found responsible or complicit in this bigotry which we hope is an isolated incident in the company.

We hope that the lessons of what happened to Rosa Parks 55 years ago on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama will not be overlooked in your decisions regarding a fair settlement to Marwan’s case.

We are waiting to hear from you and we will make your answer available to the public on our website.

Support the Canadian Boat to Gaza

Canada Palestine Association (CPA) urges everyone to support the Canadian boat to Gaza by all means, including publicizing the mission and donating funds.

CPA was one of the first organizations in Canada to support the Free Gaza Movement (FGM) financially and politically (see our meeting with the co-founder of the FGM last November in commemoration of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people http://workingtv.com/int-day-pal2009.html) and we feel this initiative is an extension of that work.

We urge our supporters to rise up to the challenge and make this solidarity mission a reality. It is important at this stage to send a message to humanity that the Canadian people are in opposition to their government’s policies that endorse Palestinian ethnic cleansing, Israeli Apartheid and war crimes. These policies are against not only the Palestinian people, but also the people of the world as detailed by the Canadian Minister of State of Foreign Affairs Peter Kent: “Canada and Israel are natural allies. This affinity extends to our respective engagement in the Americas,” http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/90001/90777/90852/7125233.html#

Support the Canadian Boat to Gaza

The time has come to send a Canadian Boat to Gaza (http://www.canadaboatgaza.org) this fall, along with other ships heading to the besieged strip from all around the world. But we need your support to make it happen.

The tragic May attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla has only strengthened the resolve of people from many nations to put together another flotilla to challenge the years-long illegal Israeli blockade of Gaza. This blockade is enforced by Israel’s unlawful attacks on humanitarian aid ships in international waters. The blockade is also sustained by the Canadian government’s unconditional support for Israel. It falls upon us, the Canadian people and our schools, unions, community and faith organizations to change this unjust status quo.
Your help is needed now to send humanitarian aid from the people of Canada to the people Gaza in a bold and direct effort to end Israel’s blockade.

This Canadian Boat to Gaza project has two objectives. First, it will inform Canadians about what Israel is doing to the people of Gaza and to all of the Palestinian people. With your support, this awareness campaign will be achieved through outreach, organizing and media work that encourages Canadians and their organizations to support the Canadian Boat to Gaza’s mission.

Second, the Canadian Boat to Gaza will undermine the blockade by shipping vital supplies into Gaza and returning with exports made in Gaza – thus asserting the right of Palestinians in Gaza to trade with the world, rather than be at the mercy of international aid. We will carry humanitarian aid that Canadians donate. The boat will also carry Canadian public figures and activists trained in non-violence, who are committed to breaking the siege of Gaza, as well as journalists and reporters.

Our mission is part of the next Gaza boat flotilla, working in cooperation with the Free Gaza Movement (http://www.freegaza.org) which has sent and coordinated many boats to break the siege of Gaza over the past years.

The Canadian Boat to Gaza is a peaceful mission — a people-to-people non-violent direct-action We sail with the spirit of promoting human rights for all and the conviction that there can be no peace without justice. Today, Palestinian people are counting on us to help them realize their rights we take for granted – to live in peace, make a living, enjoy free movement, and control their own boarders. We do not represent any government and our relationship with any state or government will not go beyond what is mandated by maritime law.

The estimated cost of this mission is $300,000. Raising this sum will depend on the generosity of those of us who can afford to make large donations as well as substantial ones such as $1,000 or $100 dollars. But every dollar counts and so we ask you to give what you can.

Help us end the blockade of Gaza by supporting the Canadian Boat to Gaza. Spread the word. We sail soon – in October! So please join others across Canada and make your support for the Canadian Boat to Gaza a priority now.

Your endorsement is much needed and your financial support is much appreciated. Please make your checks payable to:
